ypia began in 2008 with the launch of ypia Music for the classical music industry. Its aim was to provide regular networking opportunities for young people working in the arts - something which its founders, Nicki Wenham and Andreas Flohr, felt only existed for their more senior industry colleagues. ypia ensures a dialogue is maintained between these senior industry professionals and ypia members through its annual programme of talks and debates, which aim to inspire the next generation of arts leaders.

The popularity and success of this model led to the creation of ypia Theatre in May 2009. A number of joint events are held throughout the year, and full members enjoy access to both ypia Music and ypia Theatre events, irrespective of the sector in which they work. In this way, ypia hopes to promote links between two sectors which are often treated entirely separately.

What do we mean by young? Our definition of young is not as much to do with age as it is to do with your position or experience within the arts industry. ypia is open to all, but specifically intended for those who are not at senior management level.

ypia in time hopes to launch further branches for those working in other sectors.
